We are very privelaged to publish few words of Late Mr. Balu Mahendra.

Mahendra was born in 1939 into a Sri Lankan Tamil family in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.Born to a professor father,
Mahendra developed an early interest in photography after hi s father presented him with a camera. He completed his schooling at St. Michael's College, Batticaloa. At the age of 13, he got an opportunity to watch David Lean's making of The Bridge on the River Kwai during a school field trip in Sri Lanka. This eventually led him to develop an interest towards becoming a film-maker. Upon completion of his school, Mahendra joined the London University and completed a Bachelor of science (honours) degree. Prompted by his desire to become a film director, he decided to leave for India and join the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune in 1966 and ended up studying cinematography as he could not gain admissions to other disciplines. In 1969, he passed out the institute with a gold medal.
